HYCO1 has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Malaysia LNG (MLNG), a subsidiary of PETRONAS, to explore the development of a major carbon capture and utilization (CCU) facility in Bintulu, Sarawak.
The initiative aims to convert captured carbon dioxide into valuable fuels and chemicals, representing a significant step forward in industrial sustainability.
The agreement, formalized by HYCO1 CEO Gregory Carr and MLNG’s Managing Director & CEO Mohamed Syazwan Abdullah, lays the groundwork for what could become one of the largest CO2 utilization projects to date.
“This is very exciting for all stakeholders, including HYCO1 and MLNG and will benefit all Malaysians,” Gregory Carr stated.
At the heart of the collaboration is HYCO1’s proprietary CUBE™ technology, which transforms CO2 into industrial-grade syngas—a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
This innovation enables the replacement of costly natural gas with captured CO2 as the main input, delivering a more cost-effective and lower-emissions alternative to traditional syngas production.
The two companies will jointly conduct a feasibility study to assess the most effective pathways to produce low-carbon syngas tailored for a wide array of industrial applications.

By leveraging CO2 as a raw material rather than treating it solely as a waste product, the project not only reduces emissions but also generates economic value through the creation of essential fuels and chemicals.
Unlike conventional carbon capture and storage (CCS) models that focus purely on sequestration, this project takes a circular approach — recycling carbon into marketable products, rather than burying it. The CCU facility is slated for completion by 2029.
Both partners see the venture as a breakthrough in making net-zero ambitions financially viable.
Rather than treating sustainability as a cost burden, this model demonstrates that decarbonization and profitability can go hand in hand at industrial scale.
